My doctor heard a murmur
A murmur is a sound made by blood moving through the heart. Your GP hears it with a stethoscope, and it is a reason to look further rather than a diagnosis in itself.
Plenty of murmurs are entirely innocent. Others indicate that a valve is narrowed or leaking, and the only way to tell them apart reliably is to look at the valves directly.
That is what an echocardiogram does. It shows the valves opening and closing in real time and measures how much blood is moving in the wrong direction or being held back.
